An office containing paper, furniture and electrical equipment presents very different risks from a commercial kitchen, chemical warehouse or data centre. Installing the wrong system may fail to control the fire effectively, damage critical equipment or introduce additional hazards.

Offices, schools and public buildings
Automatic sprinkler systems are widely used to control fires involving ordinary combustible materials such as paper, furniture and textiles.
When a sprinkler head reaches its operating temperature, it releases water directly over the affected area. This can control the fire before it spreads throughout the building.
Water mist may provide an alternative in certain applications. It uses smaller water droplets and can reduce the volume of water discharged, but it is an engineered solution that must be designed and tested for the specific risk. It should not simply be treated as an interchangeable replacement for sprinklers.
The appropriate system will depend on the building’s layout, occupancy, evacuation strategy and overall fire risk assessment. Government guidance states that fire protection should be proportionate to the risk and form part of the building’s wider package of precautions.
Commercial kitchens
Commercial kitchens present a specific risk from hot cooking oils, grease, flames and extraction systems.
Water should not be used on burning cooking oil because it can cause the fire to spread violently. Kitchens containing deep-fat fryers and other high-temperature equipment may instead require an automatic wet chemical suppression system.
These systems discharge a specialist agent over the cooking equipment and may also shut down the appliance’s gas or electrical supply. Protection should cover the relevant equipment, cooking surfaces and extraction canopy where required.
The system should sit alongside regular cleaning, safe working procedures and suitable portable extinguishers, rather than replacing them.
Warehouses and distribution centres
Warehouses can contain significant fuel loads, high storage racks and packaging that allows fire to spread rapidly.
Sprinkler systems are often suitable, but the design must reflect:

Storage and racking height
Packaging types
Aisle widths
Building height
Changes in stock or operations
A system designed for low-level storage may no longer provide suitable protection after taller racking or different products are introduced. Fire protection should therefore be reviewed whenever warehouse layouts or stored materials change.
Data centres and critical equipment rooms
Water can control fire effectively, but uncontrolled discharge may cause serious damage to servers, communications equipment and critical records.
Depending on the risk, data centres and electrical rooms may use water mist or a gaseous suppression system. Gaseous systems can suppress fire without leaving water or powder residue, making them useful in enclosed spaces containing sensitive equipment.
However, they require specialist design. Room integrity, ventilation, warning alarms, evacuation arrangements and the potential risk to occupants must all be considered.
Industrial and flammable-liquid environments
Sites containing fuels, solvents, chemicals, gases or combustible dusts may require foam, deluge, powder or specialist explosion-suppression systems.
Water alone may be unsuitable for some flammable-liquid fires and could spread burning material. HSE guidance notes that foam may provide effective protection in certain flammable-liquid storage situations, although suitability depends on the precise materials and storage configuration.
These environments may also fall under DSEAR, which requires employers to assess and control risks from dangerous substances, fire and explosion.
